the church received its first message
about what this pontificate was going to
be about
To understand it you have to go back to the man whose name he took
In 1891
the world was on fire in a way it had never been on fire before

railways tearing through villages that had stood for a thousand years
A new kind of human being had appeared
the industrial worker
stripped of land stripped of guild
stripped of the slow rhythms of agrarian life
and dropped into the factory
Markx had an answer for him
The liberal capitalists had an answer for him
The church for a long time didn't
And then Pope Leo I 13th wrote a letter
on the condition of labor
He wrote that the worker is not a thing
He wrote that wages are a moral question not just a market one
He wrote that the state exists for the human person not the other way around
The church's answer to industrial dehumanization was that the dignity of the worker is not negotiable
That letter is the foundation stone of modern Catholic social teaching
Every social encyclical since has been a footnote to it
Now jump forward
In the middle of the 20th century a different technology shook the world
Splitting the atom changed what war meant
Radio and film and television changed what culture meant
And Pope Pius I 12th wrote and spoke again and again about a church that had to think about machines now about what they do to the soul what they do to the family what they do to the conscience
The pattern was already visible
When a new technology displaces the human the church speaks not to reject the technology to defend the human affected by it
Now jump again to us
The factory worker of 1891 has a descendant
He sits at a screen His work is words and code and images
And a machine has just arrived that can do his work

The displaced worker is back
He looks different He wears different clothes

It was careful It was thorough And it was clearly a prelude
